Where to Stay in Castara Tobago: D’ Love Shack Review
If you’ve ever dreamed of staying just steps from the golden sand with nothing but the sound of waves to lull you to sleep, D’ Love Shack in Castara, Tobago might just be your slice of paradise. We recently spent a weekend at this beachfront cabin and are excited to share every detail of the experience—including the quirks, charm, and breathtaking views.

The Drive from Mount Irvine to Castara
The journey to Castara from Mount Irvine is one of Tobago’s most scenic drives, winding through rainforest hills and coastal curves with postcard-worthy views along the way.
The route takes roughly 40 minutes by car, though we recommend taking your time to enjoy the scenery. You’ll pass through lush green hills, quaint villages, and glimpses of the sea as you climb higher into the northern interior of the island.
Expect a mix of sharp turns, narrow roads, and elevation changes—so make sure you are a confident driver. That said, it’s a thrilling and beautiful introduction to the slower pace and natural beauty that defines this side of Tobago.

First Impressions of D’ Love Shack Castara
Getting to D’ Love Shack is an adventure in itself. You’ll park at the top of a hill and follow the host’s directions down a staircase to the cabin below. Note: This spot is not ideal for those with mobility issues or anyone who prefers rolling their luggage rather than carrying it. But the reward? A front-row seat to the Caribbean Sea. A small trek that is well worth it.

The Patio
Easily our favorite feature of D’ Love Shack: the beachfront patio. With a hammock, bistro table set, and comfy outdoor furniture, it’s the ideal spot to unwind.
We spent most of our time here, listening to the waves, reading, eating, drinking, and simply soaking up the views. Though beach chairs are available from the host, we were perfectly content lounging on the patio.
Privacy was better than expected, and while the beach picks up a bit of activity by mid-afternoon on weekends, mornings and evenings were peaceful.

The Living Space
The main living area blends indoor and outdoor seamlessly, with a glass sliding door and large bay window offering panoramic views of the beach. A furniture set with a love seat and chairs welcomes you to unwind, whether you’re sipping morning coffee or reading as the sun sets.
Inside, you’ll find a side table with a lamp—great for reading—and a glass-top coffee table. There is a large patio door and a bay window on the adjacent wall. The curtains cover the patio door completely, though the bay window leaves about half a foot exposed at the top, letting morning light filter in.

Sleeping Arrangements
The bedroom area is cozy and functional. A queen-sized bed comes with two pillows and a sheet. There’s no A/C, but two powerful fans kept things cool enough at night.
You’ll hear the crashing waves all day long, as you’re mere meters from the ocean—something we found incredibly soothing.

Extras include:
- A dresser with six drawers for ample storage
- A safe for valuables
- Two bedside tables with lamps
- A towel rack with extra spools
- WiFi with decent strength
- A bar with hangers for clothing

The Open-Concept Bathroom
Here’s where the “Love Shack” name makes perfect sense: the bathroom has no door and a very open layout. The shower, encased in frosted glass, is visible from the bed and living space. There’s a toilet, sink, and mirror—also exposed. It’s hidden from the outside, but definitely designed with couples in mind.
There was plenty of hand soap, bug spray and toilet paper provided by the host. There’s just enough storage for a few toiletries; anything extra can go on the dresser. You do need to bring your own soap for the shower – so don’t forget to pack this!

The Kitchen
For a rustic cabin, the kitchen is impressively functional. A large window brings in natural light, and occasionally you will see guests from neighboring Castara Retreats passing on their way to the beach.
The kitchen is fully stocked with:
- A fridge and freezer (full size)
- Stove and oven
- Glassware, dishes, cutlery, knives, pots and pans
- Microwave, french press, electric kettle and toaster
We brought our own groceries and made several meals during our stay. Bonus: the host left us locally roasted coffee, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

The Cabin’s Character
This is a rustic, handmade cabin, and it shows—in the best way. From natural wood materials to imperfect textures, it all adds to the charm. It’s warm, earthy, and distinctly Caribbean.
You’re not coming here for luxury polish; you’re coming for atmosphere, location, and simplicity.

Get to Know Castara: A Fishing Village with Heart
Tucked between the lush rainforest and the Caribbean Sea, Castara is a small fishing village that beautifully blends tradition and tourism. It’s one of the few places in Tobago where you can witness authentic island life unfolding right alongside boutique stays and eco-conscious retreats.
What makes Castara special is its strong sense of community—locals know each other by name, and visitors are often greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. You’ll see fishermen pulling in nets at sunrise, kids playing on the sand after school, and fruit vendors selling mangoes, bananas, and coconuts from roadside stalls.
Despite being a growing travel destination, Castara hasn’t lost its roots. Many of the accommodations here are family-run, and much of the food is locally sourced or homemade. Whether you’re watching a drum circle on the beach, chatting with a local artisan, or sipping a rum punch at a village bar, Castara invites you to slow down and connect.
