How to Get to Castara Waterfall Tobago
The trail to Castara Waterfall is located across the football field in the village. You will follow the Castara River to the waterfall. Most locals know exactly where it is, so if you’re unsure, don’t hesitate to ask for directions. It’s less than a 10-minute walk through light forest along a well-trodden path.
There are no official signs, but the route is straightforward. You’ll pass bamboo groves, flowering plants, and hear the sound of water before you see it.
Getting there by car:
Drive to Castara via the Northside Road. Once in the village, park near the bridge just past the small football field. From here, walk inland along the river.
By public transport:
Shared maxi taxis run from Scarborough to Castara. Once dropped in the village, the trailhead is a short walk away.

If you stay at D’Love Shack it is a short walk from Castara beach to Castara waterfall. We were lucky enough that during our stay, the host guided us to the waterfall.
What to Expect on the Trail
This is not a strenuous hike—more of a forest walk. The path is mostly flat with a few rocks and shallow stream crossings. It can be slippery after rainfall, so proper footwear is recommended.
Expect to be surrounded by dense vegetation, butterflies, and birds. The area is part of Tobago’s Main Ridge Forest Reserve ecosystem, which is the oldest legally protected forest reserve in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1776. Though the waterfall itself isn’t inside the official boundaries, the biodiversity in the area is rich and thriving.
There are no guides, vendors, or entrance fees here—just nature. If you’re lucky, you may have the entire space to yourself.
Swimming and Photography at Castara Waterfall
At the end of the path, the 20-foot waterfall spills into a shallow pool surrounded by large rocks and lush greenery. It’s not a dramatic cascade, but the setting is peaceful and refreshing. You can climb up on the rocks, sit there and jump in.
The water is usually cool and clear, especially during the rainy season. While it’s deep enough to wade or float, it’s not suitable for diving. The light filtering through the trees makes this a great spot for photos, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.
We visited at the perfect time of the day when the sun was shining directly through the clearing above. The fresh water was refreshing and a nice temperature.
There are no facilities or seating areas, so bring what you need and pack out everything you bring in.
In typical Tobago fashion there was garbage found floating in the waterfall which our host cleaned up. I am not sure why people feel so comfortable littering here and throwing their trash in nature.

- Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon, especially during the dry season (January–May) when the trail is easier to navigate.
- Footwear: Wear hiking sandals or trail shoes with grip.

- Safety: There are no lifeguards, so use caution, especially after rainfall when water levels may rise slightly.
