Best Breakfast in Barbados: Surfer’s Cafe Review

On our very first morning in Barbados, we went for a drive in search of breakfast and stumbled upon Surfer’s Café. It’s located just a 15-minute drive from our accommodations at Ocean Spray Apartments.

We actually recognized it from a few YouTube videos we watched before the trip, so we knew we had to stop. It turned out to be such a great find that we ended up eating breakfast here all three days of our stay!

I highly recommend that you check out Surfers Cafe for breakfast (they are even open for lunch and dinner as well) next time you are in Barbados.

The Food at Surfer’s Cafe Barbados

One of the things I loved about Surfer’s Café is that I was able to try something different every day. They have a vast breakfast menu with both traditional and local breakfast options to appeal to everyone.

Traditional Breakfast Options

  • Avocado Toast – On day one, I ordered the avocado toast. The bread was incredibly thick, and the portion came with two large slices. It was tasty, though the avocado was a mash rather than sliced strips. I added a fried egg for extra protein. All of the flavours were on point, but the dense bread made for a very heavy breakfast that I don’t prefer.

  • Omelette – On the second day, I ordered a two-egg omelette with onion, bacon, tomato, and cheese. To my surprise, it was massive—probably the biggest omelette I’ve ever had! It also came with two slices of toast (much thinner than the avocado toast bread). Flavorful and satisfying, this was a solid breakfast choice.

  • Eggs Benedict – On our final morning, I couldn’t resist trying the eggs benedict, and it ended up being my favorite of all three. After the portion sizes of the previous two days, I expected it to be huge as well and even planned to share it with Rich. But when it arrived, it was a more standard portion—so he ordered something else and left me to enjoy it all. Thank you Rich, because it was absolutely delicious!

Local Breakfast Options

Rich enjoyed creating his own breakfast with different local sides each day. He tried fish cakes, fried plantain, buljol, flying fish, and eggs—all fresh and flavorful.

beverages

To drink, we ordered lattes every morning (delicious and unsweetened, just how we like them). On our second day, we were also offered fresh coconut water, which was an easy yes. Living in the Caribbean I have become accustomed to the pleasure of enjoying fresh coconut water on a daily basis.

The Atmosphere

Over our three visits, we got to sit in three different areas of the restaurant. One of the best spots is right on the waterfront, with views of the sea stretching out in front of you. During our visit, there was some sargassum seaweed that made the water near the shore look reddish and murky, but just a little further out you could see that classic crystal blue Caribbean water.

Inside, the café has a laid-back, surfer vibe. Even the bathrooms are worth noting, with porthole windows looking out at the sea—a fun touch that fits the setting.

Service

Overall, the service was very good across our three visits. On our last morning, however, we did encounter one rude staff member. We had parked in front of the restaurant (a spot we saw others use during our previous visits). As soon as we walked in, she skipped a greeting and immediately scolded us about not being able to park there. Rich moved the car right away, but the negative tone could easily have been avoided. Thankfully, another staff member served us after that, and the rest of the experience was great.

It’s worth mentioning that Monday morning was by far the busiest—getting a table felt lucky! By Tuesday and Wednesday, the café was much quieter and easier to get a seat.
