Arriving at Argyle Falls Tobago

You will see a large sign for Argyle Falls and know you have arrived. There are a couple huts near the road when you first pull in – you don’t have to stop here. You can continue down the road until you reach a sign directing you to turn right.
You might come across a tour guide along the road offering their services for the hike. While the trail is easy to follow and doesn’t require a guide, having one can enhance the experience. A knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about Tobago’s history, the rainforest’s unique ecosystem, and the waterfall itself—so if you enjoy guided adventures, it’s worth considering.

There is plenty of free parking available. You enter through the bar & pay the bartender. The cost is $50 TTD for locals and $60 TTD for foreigners. Payment via cash or card is accepted.

Once you’ve paid you can make your way to the trailhead. On the way out of the bar towards the trail had a woman set up selling hand crafted art and souvenirs available for purchase.
Hiking to Argyle Falls: What to Expect

explore the trail
From the entrance, a well-marked trail winds through the rainforest, an easy 15-minute walk surrounded by towering bamboo and the sounds of tropical birds.
The trail to the falls is lined with an incredible variety of lush botanicals, making the walk just as captivating as the destination. The towering trees and vibrant plants are truly mesmerizing—something no photo can fully capture. It’s an experience best appreciated in person.

wildlife sightings at argyle falls tobago
During the trek you can except to encounter a variety of wildlife. We were lucky to see beautiful butterflies, many lizards, fish, a blue heron and plenty of other birds.

nearing the waterfall
You will know you are close to approaching the base of the waterfall when you come across these stairs.

arriving at the base of the argyle falls
It will be obvious you have reached the base of the falls. You can choose to settle at the base on the left hand side or right hand side. I find it much easier to enter the waterfall for a swim on the left hand side. There is also more even and flat ground to sit/stand compared to the large rocks on the right side.
Crossing over to the left side of the waterfall can be a bit tricky. You need to be athletic enough to jump from rock to rock. Alternatively, you can get your feet and ankles wet and walk through.
I am accustomed to Canadian waterfalls where the submerged rocks are incredibly slick and slippery. However, that’s not what I found here at all. We believe it has to do with the fish eating all of the algae before it can buildup and become slippery.
Swimming at Argyle Falls: Best Spots to Take a Dip
The cool, refreshing water is perfect for a swim, whether you stay at the first pool or climb higher for a more secluded dip.
Enjoy bathing in the fresh water!

Hiking to the top of argyle falls tobago
You don’t have to stop at the base of the falls. You can continue to the upper pools you see pictured. There was quite a few people chilling in the middle pool as pictured here. If you do plan to hike to the very top – I highly recommend you come prepared in the right footwear to scale the hill and you head up there first – before swimming in the pool at the base. I just find the hike is easier to do dry. On previous visits we have went to the very top but on this particular day we stayed at the base.

Time to head back out
Despite a leisurely walk to the waterfall in order to be able to enjoy all of the sights and sounds – I still found myself marvelling at new sights on the walk back to the parking lot. The day had been mostly overcast but the sun was shining as we made our way out – creating beautiful lighting.

Argyle Waterhole Bar
Grab yourself a cold and refreshing drink from the Argyle Waterhole Bar before hitting the road home or to your next destination. Well maintained facilities are available for use.

We then hit the road back towards Scarborough on the Windward road. I will never get over the beauty of this drive. The waves at the coastline were so large and rough that they were sprawling on to the road – see pictures below.
