Discover Gasparee Island: A Hidden Gem in Trinidad

When thinking of tropical escapes in Trinidad and Tobago, many travellers envision pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and untouched nature. One of the island’s best-kept secrets is Gasparee Island, an idyllic spot located just off the coast of Trinidad. With its secluded charm, serene atmosphere, and proximity to both Port of Spain and the bustling mainland, Gasparee Island offers a unique opportunity for a tranquil getaway surrounded by nature. In this post, we’ll explore what it’s like to stay on Gasparee Island and why this lesser-known destination is worth the visit.
My First DDI Trip
Back in 2016, on my very first trip to Trinidad, our group explored all the major attractions, including an unforgettable “Down D Islands” (DDI) experience. It remains one of my favourite travel memories.
Our adventure started with a trip to the grocery store to stock up on supplies. A fun surprise? We spotted the former Prime Minister of Trinidad casually in the parking lot! Once prepped, we headed to the marina to wait for our boat, which soon arrived to ferry us to our island destination.
The boat ride was quick but exhilarating, and when we arrived, the real work began—lugging all our supplies up a steep flight of stairs from the dock to the house perched on a cliff. The effort was worth it, though. The house was incredible, with a wraparound porch that offered jaw-dropping views of the open ocean, dotted with the glowing lights of oil tankers. Trinidad and Tobago’s oil industry is a huge part of the country’s wealth, and you can see its presence both offshore and in places like southern Trinidad, where oil rigs dominate the horizon.
We had a blast liming on the porch of our vacation rental taking in the incredible views, swimming in the public pool and enjoying a boat tour DDI. One of Rich’s friends joined us after work, arriving with a bucket of KFC. And let me tell you, KFC in Trinidad and Tobago is legendary! Sitting on the porch, eating KFC, drinking wine, while soaking up the views? Pure bliss.
I can’t recommend a visit to Gasparee Island enough for anyone planning a trip to Trinidad. It’s a unique and memorable way to experience the country’s natural beauty, laid-back vibe, and warm hospitality.

Best Time to Stay on Gasparee Island: Seasonal Considerations
Gasparee Island is a year-round destination, but certain times of the year may offer the best experience:
- Dry Season (December to April): This is the most popular time to visit Trinidad and Tobago, as the weather is dry and pleasant. The seas are calmer, making it ideal for boat trips, snorkeling, and beach days.
- Wet Season (May to November): While it’s a quieter time on the island, the wet season can bring occasional rain showers and rougher seas. This may make some outdoor activities, such as snorkeling or hiking, a bit more challenging. However, if you’re looking for solitude, this might be the best time to visit, as the island will be less crowded.

Cost and Booking Information
Staying on Gasparee Island is often more affordable than staying in luxury resorts, but prices can vary depending on the type of accommodation:
- Private Villas: Rates for a private villa can range from $150 to $350 USD per night, depending on the size, location, and amenities.
- Guesthouses: Small guesthouses or eco-lodges may charge between $75 to $150 USD per night.
Since the island is small, accommodations are limited, and many are booked well in advance, especially during the high season (December to April). It’s a good idea to book your stay early through travel agencies or directly with the property.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Stay
- Pack Light: Space on the island is limited, and most accommodations don’t offer large luggage storage. A small carry-on or backpack should suffice.
- Bring Snacks: Since dining options are limited, consider bringing some snacks, water, or specific food preferences.
- Prepare for Limited Connectivity: Gasparee Island is relatively isolated, so don’t expect strong Wi-Fi or cell service. This is the perfect opportunity to unplug and enjoy nature!
